Indian Army chief Visiting Nepal

India's new Army chief General Bikram Singh is visiting Nepal on the second week of July.
This will be the first foreign visit of Singh after his appointment as the Indian Army chief last month. Singh will be in Nepal from July 10-13 and is scheduled to meet President Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, among others, according to Nepal Army Spokesperson Ramindra Chhetri.
He will be conferred with the title of honorary general of the Nepal Army by President Yadav. The Nepal Army and the Indian Army share a six-decade-old tradition of conferring the honorary rank to the army chiefs of the two nations.
The Nepal Army has said the visit is part of efforts to continue the tradition and will be aimed at bolstering bilateral military ties. "The fact that Gen Singh has decided to be in Nepal for his first foreign visit after assuming office demonstrates the growing importance attached by India to the Nepal Army," said a highly placed Army source.
India's previous Army chief Gen V K Singh had visited Nepal twice during his tenure on the invitation of the Chief of Army Staff, General Chhatra Man Singh Gurung.
