A decisive talks between the major three political parties and Samyukta
Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) is due to be held on Tuesday.
With barely a week to go before the statute deadline of May 27, the political parties have intensified talks to give a logical conclusion to all the pending contentious issues.
However, the time for today’s meeting has not been fixed, Prime Minister’s political advisor Devendra Poudel informed.
The parties are yet to decide on whether federating country on the basis of single ethnic identity or multi ethnic identity.
The meeting held on Monday ended inconclusively after the UCPN (Maoist) and the SLMM proposed a three-month extension of the Constituent Assembly (CA) by introducing a preliminary draft of the constitution by May 27, deferring for now any agreement on federalism.
Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML had proposed promulgating the constitution before May 27, and referring the points of contention on federalism to “the transformed parliament” and the proposed Central Federal Commission.
Though various proposals were floated in the cross-party talks on state restructuring, agreement is still elusive.

Talking Strings, an ‘instrumental fusion album on Sitar’ featuring
Sitarist Sita Maiya Rajchal was lunched at a programme organised at the
Nepal Tourism Board, Pradarshani Marg on May 16.
The instrumental album was launched jointly by Indian Ambassador Jayant Prasad and Vice Chancellor of the Nepal Academy of Music and Drama Prachanda Malla. It features guitarists Anil Shahi, Dipak Thapa, Dipesh Singh, Anup Das, and Will, along with JB Lama and Binaya Maharjan on the flute. Santosh Bhakta Shrestha has been featured on the Esraj while Laxmi Prasad Dangol plays percussion along with Kenjuma Subba as well as soprano Rabin Karki Dhali.
Rajchal, and a few other members of the musical crew gave a heart rendering live performance on Wave of Emotion, a six-minute instrumental taken from the album being launched. The album consists of seven other tracks composed by Joogle Dangol, a known name in the Nepali music industry.
The album, a fusion of Eastern and Western classical music hopes to receive attention from a youth-base that is increasingly stepping away from classical music. Each track on Talking Strings is composed with a different theme in mind and tells its own story. “I feel that instrumental music can be more powerful and meaningful than lyrical songs,” says Dngol. “Lyrics can be inhibiting while
stories told solely through instruments are more philosophical.”

If you’re the kind that has long followed the adventures of them brawny
costumed men (and occasional woman) in possession of enviable
superhuman abilities, 2012 takes you to the pinnacle of your spandexed
dreams. The Marvel world all but exploded with the recent release of The
Avengers, a big, noisy, relentless spectacle that will have disciples
of the genre whooping for joy—others, not so much. Written and directed
by Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator and notorious comic-book junkie Joss
Whedon, the film ties up several back-stories that we’ve been offered
in installments since 2008 as part of Marvel’s ‘Cinematic Universe’—Iron
Man I and II starring Robert Downey Jr as quippy billionaire Tony
Stark, the Incredible Hulk with Edward Norton (reprised from Eric Bana’s
mediocre 2003 take on the green giant), 2011’s Thor with Chris
Hemsworth as the hammer-wielding Nordic god and Captain America: The
First Avenger starring a flag-wearing Chris Evans. But those of you
expecting to witness any degree of profundity in this large-scale
men-in-tights mashup, be warned; The Avengers is allabout
action—glorious, maniacal action—and little else. This is one strictly
for the fans.
Last we saw, Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), director of supersecret US government agency S.H.I.E.L.D, with the help of the sultry spy Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), was busy recruiting the big boys for the Avengers Initiative, a superhero backup plan in case of an earth crisis. Enlisted are Iron Man and Captain America, the latter freshly roused from an icy 70-year nap. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo, the most effective Hulk by far) is currently in a Calcutta slum keeping his angry alter ego at bay. And Thor is kicking back in the alien world of Asgard, having just quelled the overreaching ambitions of his adopted brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

The way a child is reared is influenced by the culture, religious
beliefs and societal norms of the particular community into which the
child is born. Parents and families tend to follow what they have
observed being practiced for generations, and don’t often stop to
question the logic behind these practices. It can be reassuring to go
along with what you see others doing, rather than going the extra step
to do something different and risk being criticised for it. Most Nepali
families have several dos and don’ts when it comes to handling a
newborn, and these have become common irrespective of the religion and
ethnicity of such families, owing to the fact that various communities
have long co-existed in harmony in our country, and have naturally come
to share certain cultural beliefs over time.
It is, for example, a good practice to keep a newborn warm and wrapped up, to simulate the environment within the mother’s womb. But people tend to overdo this. Clothing the baby heavily in many layers and confining the child to a heated room can cause dehydration through sweating. Post-delivery, the mother and baby are usually kept in very warm rooms without proper ventilation because it is believed they will get sick from the cold air outside. And when visitors come into these poorly-ventilated premises, it is even more risky, particularly if they are carrying air-borne infections like a cough or a cold—the baby could easily get infected. And using coal heaters to warm the room could also lead to carbon monoxide poisoning if the rooms are not allowed enough access to fresh air.

Researchers on Thursday challenged a tenet of modern medicine that
higher levels of "good" cholesterol automatically boost cardiovascular
health.
In a study published in The Lancet, investigators said they found no evidence to back the belief that higher levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol routinely reduce the risk of a heart attack.
High concentrations of HDL are one of the big markers for blood tests.
They are monitored as much as low levels of "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) as a yardstick of dangerously clogged arteries.
The paper used a method called mendelian randomisation to compare heart-attack risk among people who inherited known genetic variants that gave them higher HDL levels.
According to conventional wisdom, these individuals would have a lower risk of a coronary.
But the study, which looked at nearly 12,500 people with a history of a heart attack and over 41,000 otherwise healthy counterparts, found this was not always the case.
The results are important because of the use of drugs, sometimes inflicting side effects, which are administered to boost HDL cholesterol levels.
"These results show that some ways of raising HDL cholesterol might not reduce risk of myocardial infarction [heart attack] in human beings," said Sekar Kathiresan of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
"Therefore, if an intervention such as a drug raises HDL cholesterol, we cannot automatically assume that risk of myocardial infarction will be reduced."
In contrast, the study said "bad" cholesterol remained an accurate marker of cardiac risk.
Separately, a study, also carried in Thursday's Lancet, confirmed the benefits of LDL-lowering statins for protecting people with no previous history of cardiovascular disease.

President Ram Baran Yadav on Monday expressed serious concerns over
crippling shutdowns, attacks on the media and lack of concrete progress
on constitution drafting.
With barely a week to go before the statute deadline of May 27, the President held separate and serious discussions with top leaders of four major political forces and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and drew their attention to the hardship the public has been facing, their grievances and political commitments made in the past.
Before holding discussions with the PM, Yadav held meetings with UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala, CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal and Chairman of the Madhesi Janadhikar Fouram-Loktantrik Bijaya Kumar Gachhaddar.
The President urged the leaders to forge consensus immediately on disputed issues and create an environment conducive to drafting the constitution.
Koirala said the President asked the leaders to understand the gravity of the situation and come to terms on the disputed issues by today.
In response, leaders said they were doing their best to forge consensus.
The President also criticised the manner in which leaders were seeking consensus. "How can you arrive at consensus without holding concrete talks? Instead of forging consensus you are coming out in the streets and fuelling the already tense situation," the president told the leaders.
The leaders assured Yadav that they will bring out the constitution by May 27 at any cost.
"Why is the state not paying serious attention to the public's sufferings for long due to the strikes. Is it not the government's duty to address the public's suffering?" the President told the PM, according to the President's Press Adviser, Rajendra Dahal.

The civil society oprganisations said violence should never be a medium to press for demands in a democracy.
Though NEFIN Chairman Raj Kumar Lekhi, in a statement, urged cadres not to obstruct the movement of media persons, banda supporters have ignored the call.

Central leaders of the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML on Monday
presented an 11-point "note of suggestions" to their leadership for a
timely constitution.
The leaders also demanded that the latest five-point agreement among the parties be implemented with immediate effect.
A joint meeting of the leaders of the NC and the UML in Singha Durbar dwelt on the present political situation and suggested that contentious issues in the constitution writing process be settled in accordance with the five-point deal signed on May-5.
Any idea of extending the term of the Constituent Assembly would be "undemocratic" and, therefore, should be discarded, leaders who attended the meeting said.
The also demanded that the five-point pact be followed while dealing with issues of state restructuring and national unity government formation.
As the leaders said state restructuring is a very sensitive and complex issue, they recommended that wide consultations be held on this with civil society members, intellectuals and other experts. Multiple states must be carved out on the basis of common identity, said the leaders.
They further demanded that the proposed "unnaturally large" central and provincial legislatures be downsized and that the number be decided on the basis of geographical, demographic and economic viability.
Stressing on a uniform way of electing executive heads of the centre and the provinces, the meeting demanded that a certain quota be reserved in the direct election constituency for the oppressed and the dalits.
The meeting expressed serious concerns over Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal's recent statements that "instigated communal riots and jeopardised social harmony." Leaders demanded that the Maoist leadership publicly apologise for its "provocative" statements.
Twenty-five leaders--sixteen from the UML and nine from the NC--were present in the joint meeting.
Prakash Jwala, Khagraj Adhikari, Arun Nepal, Ghanashyam Bhusal, Bhanubhakta Joshi, Yogesh Bhattarai, Bhanubhakta Dhakal,Netra Prasad Panthi, Jagannath Khatiwada, among others, represented the UML, while NP Saud, Chandra Bhandari, Gagan Thapa, Dhanraj Gurung, Badri Pandey, Ajay Dwivedi, Jivan Pariyar, Surendraraj Pandey and Badri Pandey represented the NC in the meeting.
