"Protest assembly"
Around two dozen political parties including the Nepali Congress and
CPN-UML organised a protest assembly, which was dubbed as their “show of
strength”, at Khula Manch in the Capital on Friday.
The parties called for the gathering against what they call the “UCPN (Maoist)’s premeditated plan to capture state power and impose authoritarianism through the drama of another Constituent Assembly elections.”
Top leaders of NC, UML, among others parties, addressed the mass meeting in which they came down heavily upon the Maoists. The leaders urged the Maoists to quit the government at the earliest to pave way for consensus. They held the Maoists responsible for the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly.
The party leaders refuted the accusations made by the Maoists of being against federalism and said they were never against federalism.
Raising objection to the PM’s decision to disband the Constituent Assembly (CA) and announce fresh elections, the parties warned of intensifying their protests if the ruling coalition did not come to political consensus.
Various rallies taken out from different places across the city merged into the joint protest assembly.
NC President Sushil Koirala, senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel, CPN Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal, senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and among other leaders addressed function.

To proclaim unity among the parties, the leaders held their hands together for a moment before kick starting the program. The program was named as ‘National Democratic Mission’
Addressing the program, NC General Secretary Prakash Man Singh said that the proclamation of a fresh election, by Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, was unconstitutional. He further accused the UCPN (Maoist) of being the major culprit for the dissolution of Constituent Assembly (CA).
Singh further claimed that PM Bhattarai should quit to make way for a national consensus government. “We have heard that PM Bhattarai has run away to Pokhara, scared of this gathering. Our next demonstration might drive him away form the country,” said Singh.
Moreover, Rastriya Janamorcha Party leader Sadhya Bahadur Bhandari said that even the ethnic groups do not want an ethnic-based federalism. “Our National Anthem was written by Byakul Maila, selected by Satya Mohan Joshi and given music by Ambar Gurung, all of them are indigenous. Should we discard it because it was made by indigenous?” said Bhandari.
Leader of Sadbhawana (Anandidevi) Devendra Mishra also addressed the meeting. The crowd condemned him in the beginning for speaking in Hindi. However, NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel mellowed the crowd saying that all Nepalese languages should be respected by all Nepalese.
Furthermore, NC leader Bhim Bahadur Tamang said that the issue of ethnic based federalism was raised by the Maoist to disintegrate the nation. NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel also supported his statement. He claimed that Maoists do not want federalism; it is just their means to be in power.
Similarly, Rastriya Prajatantra Party leader Lokendra Bahadur Chand accused the Maoists of having triggered an ethnic war within Nepal. RPP Chairman Pashupati Shamsher Rana also seconded Chand. “Maoists leaders want to promulgate a constitution that would support them. The want a totalitarian government,” said Rana.
